Bluewhales- Finwhales- Seiwhales and
Humpback whales
are the actors in the
show. Almost on each departure we had
encounters with the huge baleen whales.
In this time of the year the water is rich in
plankton, krill, and small fish. The baleen
whales are attracted by this enormous
amount of food and stay in our waters to
feed on the food resources as long as
they can find it here.

The Bluewhale is biggest animal ever lived on earth. Its length is 33 m and
weighs not less than 150 tons. He is bigger than any Dinosaur lived on earth!
He can reach up to 200 tons which are equal to 33 african elephants.

The
Humpback whale is known as the singing whale and the most known
species among cetaceans. He is easy to recognize by his big flippers. He is
a rorqual whale like the bluewhale and the biological datas are very similar
to the other members of the rorqual family. Interesting is that Diatomeen life
on his skin. The Humpback whale is known for his breaches.

Blue and humpback whales live in all oceans up to the edge of the ice. In
this large territories they have long migrations of thousands of kilometers.
That's why they pass also by the Azores in March, April and June. During the
northern summer they live close to the Arctic ice to reach the food resources
which are covered by the ice in the winter. During winter they stay in warmer
waters in tropic or subtropic.

Beside the big baleen whales there are some species that stay all
year around in azorean waters. Female
Spermwhales and calves
stay always in warmer waters.
Pilot whales and false killer whales
might also be seen as well as Sei whales, Finback whales or
Minky whales.

The residents families of the dolphins in the Azorean waters, consist
of
Risso’s-, Bottlenose dolphins and Common dolphins.

Our trips to the whales are calculated for two weeks. It might
happen, that some bad weather or winds come up and there-
fore we can not depart. Therefore we must be flexible with our
boat excursion in dates and times.

When spring comes in March and April, the temperatures are between
16 – 22 Celsius. The rain is less and the daylight becomes longer.
You feel the spirit of the Island that wakes up after a long winter sleep
and you might see the snow cap of Mount Pico.
Also at this time of the year, you see the flowers blooming everywhere
creating a spring atmosphere feeling and the incenso scent from the
flowers covers the island.

Let's welcome the giants of the oceans ...
